Ebenezer Church – York

Ebenezer WAM Church, York, was one of those indigenous independent African churches that came into being during the second half of the 19th century.

The church is located along the Freetown peninsular some kilometers away from the capital city of Freetown. Just months after the death of Anthony O’Connor in 1885, the church was built and opened for Christian worship to the glory of God.

It is revealed that the total money used for construction amounted to three hundred and seventy pounds sterling (£370), out of which three hundred and sixty pounds (£360) was raised by the local congregation within the village. For one hundred and thirty years since its inception in 1885, Ebenezer has stood the test of time, with several Ministers and Superintendent Ministers superintending the affairs of the church.

These Superintendents included Rev. H.A. Samuels, Rev. J.C. Mac-Thompson, Rev. T.E.A. Taylor, Rev. Daniel C. Palmer and Rev. Mrs. Beatrice Jones, all of whom have taken the challenge to modernize the church to the present condition. Prior to the rise of the 2014 Annual Assembly, held at Centenary Tabernacle Church, it was announced by the then General Superintendent, Rev. Chief Gbokowai Dixon Modupeh Speck, that York Circuit was to host the 2015 Annual Assembly, during the superintendency of Rev. Daniel C. Palmer. Consider the load of work they were to accomplish in such a short time, with little or no funds readily available.

The Circuit started working in a low key whilst waiting for sister churches, the UK Fellowship, and individuals for their assistance. The outcome of the communications with them was satisfactory and the Circuit was pleased. Today, Ebenezer society can boast of a refurbished chapel. We are all thankful to God for this great achievement. Ebenezer WAM Church, York, now stands as a beacon of hope and salvation in that part of God’s Vineyard.

To mark history, the Ebenezer WAM Church, York, hosts the 90th Annual Assembly Sessions, being the 164th District meeting in Connexion with the Ex-United Methodist Free Church (UMFC), on the theme “Slack not thy riding until I bid thee to stop (2nd Kings 4: 24), under the General Superintendent and Chairman, Rev. Donald Clarence-John, and Bro. Claude E.D. Faulkner, Assistant General Superintendent.

The Ebenezer Society is led by Rev. Samuel Koroma, a dedicated and compassionate leader with over 15 years of service in the Methodist Church. Rev. Koroma is known for his heartfelt sermons and strong commitment to pastoral care, making himself available to all members of the community. Under his guidance, the society continues to thrive, fostering an environment of unity, support, and spiritual growth.
