In 1887, the Rev. John Browne-Nichols conceived the idea of church expansion in the east end of Freetown and around the Bombay Street area. A piece of land was acquired through the help and cooperation of men like the late O.W. Bishop. J.W.
Thompson, E.T. John and M.W. Turner. Meetings were held in the house of Mr. Henry Lawson at Upper Bombay Street and there Rev. John Browne-Nichols made his intention known. This is how the church, named after the late Rev.
The structure was completed and opened for divine services on 22nd July 1909. The members have been mostly women, chief among whom was Mother Deborah Stober. The men in the congregation were few in number and normally did not appear to be cooperative in the performance of their duties. They rather retarded or deterred progress in the church instead of raising it.
The fortunes of the society have ebbed and flowed through the high determination of the women and were achieved during the association of men like the late E. Coker, a much respected school-teacher who served the church for many years as Organist and Choir Master. Mention should also be made of the work, for the good of the church, of Bro. J.T. Showers (Preacher) and Bro. Erubami Roberts, Senior Society Steward and Connexional Treasurer.
These brethren served their Maker well and will receive their just reward. At some point, the congregation would appear to be made up solely of members of the Smith family, the doyen of which was the late Bro. Vidal Smith, who served in every position in the society.
The society's leadership, under the guidance of [Leader's Name], is dedicated to nurturing the spiritual well-being of its congregation while inspiring a spirit of service and fellowship.
