Judea Church- Lumley, Wilberforce

This church holds the distinction of being the first to be built in the village of Wilberforce, founded in 1811. Although meetings were being held under a cotton tree up, by the Guard Room by the Military Barracks,  as early as 1812, it was not until 1814 that the first structure was completed. The dedication was performed by Rev. Nylander, an English Minister, assisted by Rev. John Delloys, a liberated African, on the 16th March, 1814. It was constructed of mud and wattle with a bamboo roof.

The members were not highly educated but they had the Spirit of God in them.

In the year 1828, the West Indian Army arrived and they demolished the old building. The church was removed to the village at Wilberforce (near the market) where the present building is.

The foundation of the church was laid on the 16th February, 1839. Work started on the building of a new church with white lime and stone work under a self-help project. During a time of confusion, the work suffered a setback for some time but was carried on later by African workers. Men, women and children gave a helping hand and the building was completed on the 6th April 1841.

There was a school called Free Church School founded in the year 1840 for children around the village area. The children of the school were members of the church choir. An anthem was sung when the church was opened. “All Thy works shall praise Thee, O God, and Thy saints shall bless Thee”.

The African Ministers who have served the church are:- The Rev. T.T. Campbell, J. B. Nicols, T.B. Campbell, T.M. Rose, W. Micklethwaite (Missionary), G.O. Gabbidon, C.L.W. Coker, Jonathan Leigh, E.J.T. Harris, W.E.A. Pratt, T.D. Shears, J.G. Hyde, W.T.C. Ashley, I.S.T. Fewry, D.H. Shears, E.A.E. Cole, G.B. Turner, S.O. Bright, J.A.D. Davies, G.N. Pratt, I.S. Thomas, Macmandus Macauley, all of blessed memory. May their souls rest in perfect peace,

The church building was closed for renovation in 1975 and re-opened 10th November 1985 by the late Rev. J.A.D. Davies. During the closure, services were held in the church school room founded in the year 1840 and was demolished in the year 2003 and a double church hall building erected, unveiled and dedicated on 29th February 2004 by Rev. J.M. Pratt, General Superintendent.
