Calvary Society - Gbendembu, Goderich

During the early months of the year 1969, Rev. John D.S. Davies, a Pentecostal Priest from Liberia, went to Goderich Village in search of land on which to erect a Pentecostal church. He came in contact with Bro. (later Rev.) C.A.I. Noah, who was then a member of the Huntingdon Church, Goderich. As there was no available land at Goderich, Rev. Davies was directed to Gbendembu village where some Christians had started an open air church service. Rev. Davies and Bro. Noah met with these Christians who accepted them as their Pastor and Agent.

Coming to the rainy season of 1969, the church group moved to the verandah of the late Sis. Henrietta V. Morgan. The verandah soon proved to be too small; this caused Bro. Abayomi and his wife, Esther Fowler, to offer one of their houses to be used as the church.

Shortly after, Rev. John D.S. Davies left for Liberia and the church was lwft without a Pastor.

The officers of the church consulted Rev. John, the Circuit Minister of the Huntingdon Church at Lumley and Goderich to admit their infant church into his circuit. They were sent to meet with the General Superintendent of the Huntingdon Connexion, Rev. Dr. D.A. Shodeke, who visited them on a Sunday and held a divine and Communion Service. Later, some pews from Lumley church were sent to them. Visit of a Priest from the Huntingdon Church, which they were expecting, did not take place.

All the time, Bro. C.A.I. Noah was employed in the Railway Department where the late Bro. J. A. Roberts, of the W.A.M. Church, was also working. Bro. Noah discussed with Bro. Roberts the problems facing their infant church. Bro. Roberts became interested and his interest caused officers of this infant church to contact Rev. I.S.T. Fewry, then General Superintendent of the WAM Church, who, after accepting their application to be a society of the WAM Church, invited their representatives to attend the Annual Assembly of the WAM Church in the year 1970.

The society became a member of the Wilberforce Circuit under the Superintendence of the late Rev. G.B. Turner and Bro. Noah became his agent. The late headman was Thomas Chambers, who was very active in planting the church in the village. Therefore the church became known as Chambers Memorial.
