This church was dedicated by Rev. Thomas Truscott, General Superintendent of the United Methodist Free Church (UMFC) in 1887. The original structure was part of the West African Methodist Society. At the founding of the West African Methodist Church, in 1844, the congregation came over and the edifice was renovated and improved upon to be used as a place of worship. It thus became the second church to join the Anthony O’Connor Group.
The first structure was erected at Goderich Street at the spot where the King Memorial UMC now stands. That property originally belonged to the Baptist Mission. In 1842, some members of the society, who were living in the Circular Road axis, acquired the present site, and work on the building structure commenced in January 1843. The church was completed, and the dedication service was held on the 29th of November 1853.
The church was first named “African Tabernacle Church”. In 1856, the building of the school started. It was then that the old church structure was renamed “Centenary Tabernacle”.
Several rehabilitation works have been carried out over the years. In 1972, a major renovation was undertaken by the membership of this society. The original one central door was removed and transformed to include two side doors, under the circuit superintendence of Rev. C.E.J.
Remesa-Coker. In 2013, the then Chapel Steward, Bro. Emmanuel Baker, spearheaded the changing of the windows in the church, under the circuit superintendence of the Rev. Donald H.O. Williams. Worth mention is the change of the wooden ceiling to a PVC ceiling in 2018, led by Bro. Bankole D.W. Richards, Circuit Steward, and the Rev. Donald Clarence-John, then Circuit Superintendent.
Centenary Tabernacle Church is now led by Rev. Sylvester E.A. Williams, who is committed to guiding our congregation in faith and service. Under his leadership, the society has flourished, providing a welcoming environment where everyone can grow in their spiritual journey.
