In 1899, freed slaves from the Republic of Congo, who settled in the area now known as Congo Town, founded a church.
The church started with the congregation meeting for services at the compound of 14 Main Road, Congo Town. The church was then known as Zimba Church. It was built of mud and with a thatched roof and the congregation largely comprised of fishermen and their families.
As the membership grew, the need was felt for a much bigger church building and on the 27th February, 1925, the foundation for a new church building was laid by Rev. G. Stedeford under the General Superintendent, Rev. W.S. Micklethwaite.
In 1953, there was a major rebuilding of the church structure, with the wooden portions being replaced with cement blocks.
This building again became too small and on the 23rd April, 1966, the foundation for the extension of the building was laid by the then Mayor of Freetown, Mrs. Constance Cummings-John. Work was completed in 1971 and the re-opening and re-dedication ceremony was performed by the then General Superintendent, Rev. I.S.T. Fewry, under the Superintendence of Rev. G.B. Turner.
The Church has been undergoing major changes since 1999. In 2010, when Rev. Beatrice E. Jones became Circuit Minister, she challenged the congregation to think seriously about the extension of the vestry as it was too small. With her zeal, she continued to encourage members and on Sunday 26th February, 2012, the Vestry Project was launched by Sis. Kathleen Yomie George, Senior Society Steward, Jordan WAM Church, Murray Town, with the sum of five hundred thousand leones (Le500,000). Rev. Beatrice E. Jones and the Circuit Steward, Bro. Tommy D. Taylor also donated the sum of five hundred thousand leones each on that day.
The foundation for the extended vestry was then laid by the oldest member of the church, Sis. Margaret Bell, on Saturday 7th July, 2012, after a short service conducted by the Circuit Staff (Rev. Donald Clarence-John, Rev. Beatrice E. Jones and Bro. Sylvester Williams (now Rev. Williams))
The society is led by Rev. Alexander H.P. Macarthy, a dedicated and inspirational figure in our community. With a deep commitment to faith and service, Macarthy guides the congregation with wisdom and compassion. Known for their engaging sermons and pastoral care, [Leader’s Name] plays a crucial role in supporting and uplifting the members of St. Peters Society, encouraging them to live out their faith with purpose and integrity.
