The church started way back in 1970 during the General Superintendence of the Rev. Isaac S.T. Fewry. It came as a result of considering the distance some of the members at Bureh Town had to cover to York for worship service.
So the need arose for a place of worship in that community to reduce the burden on the members who then had to travel to York.
Due to the urgency and lack of funds back then, neither the membership nor the Connexion could not erect a building, so they decided to use a schoolroom as a place of worship. During the circuit superintendence of the Rev. Jeffery C. Mac-Thompson, an attempt was made to start the church building with funds raised by Jordan Stewards’ Union when they were invited by the Circuit Superintendent.
The Superintendent employed the services of the late Bro. Tunde Augustus Marke of Centenary Tabernacle who travelled to Bureh Town and stayed there for the weekend in order to complete the foundation. Rev. D.M. Speck, then General Superintendent, paid a visit to assess the work done. He was advised by the late Bro. Godfrey Hagan to demolish the whole foundation as, according to Bro. Hagan, “The work wasn’t properly done”.
During the superintendence of the Rev. H. A. Samuels and Rev. Daniel C. Palmer, strides were made to raise funds to kick-start the building. After the rise of the Annual Assembly of 2016, the Rev. Beatrice Enid Jones was posted as Circuit Superintendent and Rev. Mrs. Melrose Sheriff as Circuit Minister. Douglas Memorial WAM Church was still holding its services at the Rural Community School of which two classrooms were set up for worship services.
The land then still had the foundation of the church, with plenty of grass all over it. After consultation with the then Senior Society Steward, Bro. Small, and membership, the Superintendent, together with Bro. Small, hung heads together and decided to embark on the building project for the church. As the village schoolroom was not always in satisfactory conditions for church service and was getting too small for the congregation.
The General Superintendent, Rev. Chief Gbokowai D.M. Speck, gave his approval for the project to start in 2016. Bro. Willie Small cut the grass and backfilled the foundation and construction work started, supervised by a professional contractor. The project was divided into three phases: (1) strengthening the foundation and erection of pillars, (2) roofing of the building, (3) construction and finishing of the church edifice.
The first phase started and was completed in three months. This was followed by the second phase wherein the roofing was done. While waiting for money to start the third phase, an unfortunate incident happened. Sheep and goats were left in the schoolroom and they desecrated our place of worship within a short time. As a result, the unfinished building was made ready with rice bags and straw mats. It became a place of worship with plenty of sand on the floor. Worship services commenced on Christmas Day, 25th December, 2018.
In 2019, the Rev. Ing Rodney J. Lewis replaced Rev. Mrs. Sheriff. As an engineer and a professional contractor, Rev. Lewis took over the building project. Under his supervision, the third phase started. During this time, the walls of the building were constructed, all doors and windows were fixed, the floor was tiled and the entrance to the church was completed.
One toilet was also fixed with a septic tank constructed by 2022. Before this set of Ministers bade farewell to the circuit, the church was painted internally. It is quite a beautiful edifice, all to the glory of God, to be finished under the supervision of the incoming staff. Finance was made available through donations from individual WAM members in various societies, some committees in the Connexion, the staff of the York Circuit(especially from Ebenezer Society, York) and proceeds from Thanksgiving services and individual members of Douglas society.
